-- work blog contact work blog contact syrup when south place hotel invited me to display my photos in their private members club, i could have curated a selection of work from my existing catalogue and proudly handed over a ready-made exhibition. but where's the fun in that? instead, i decided to set myself a challenge. i'd develop, produce, shoot and hang an original series of work, specifically with the venue in mind – in just 4 weeks. 'syrup' is all about colour and gloss, filth and stickiness. it's about decadence, about deliciousness... and my love of hotdogs. 'is it covered in sauce? is it really sweet? aye. i'll have one.' make-up is by sadaf ahmad and styling is by clare nicolson. portraits people are the main reasons i take photos. i love to shoot a wide variety of styles when trying to get across the personality of my sitter. finding out who that person is, then letting everyone see it, is something that i will always enjoy. food i love shooting food. i love eating food. food is great. folk i dont know what i would do if someone came into my house, rearranged my living room and told me to squeeze myself under a shelf while holding a synth in my socks. folk is an ongoing collection of portraits depicting the friends and relatives who have affected the development of me. god bless all who allow me to take pictures of them. longflint i was asked by the good people at longflint to shoot the content of a promotional newspaper they were creating in collaboration with paved with gold and newspaper club. this project involved a series of trips to longflint suppliers, team portraits and studio product photography. it allowed me to fully create a brand personality through photography. its also crazy tasty. cycas hospitality cycas hospitality manages a selection of extended stay hotels across the uk. they asked if i could shoot some lifestyle images across their range of represented hotel brands that added a bit of warmth and fun, focusing on the guest experience. movado movado was founded in la chaux-de-fonds, switzerland in 1881. recognized today for its iconic museum dial and modern aesthetic. movado timepieces are in the permanent collections of museums worldwide. i enjoy experimenting with colour and light when shooting these classic designs and the results have always been a lot of fun. crisp sandwiches every morning, my wife and i start the day by drinking cups of tea together in my office. we talk about our plans for the day, our plans generally... on this particular day, she asked him what i was up to and i said, 'i'm taking photos of crisp sandwiches. and then i'm going to make a book.' and so i did. and here it is. this is 'crisp sandwiches: a guide book' by garry maclennan. printed on lovely smooth a5 paper, it features 10 crisp sandwich 'recipes', 10 ace photographs of crisp sandwiches and a snazzy crisp packet pull-out poster. from what to do with a mccoys ridge cut to what never to do with a skip, you'll want to taste test all of these savoury snacks. it can be purchased from www.notthekind.com the robin collective the robin collective are a collective of designers, artists, chefs, entertainers, photographers, actors and writers. they organise imaginative and engaging events, pop-ups and promotions: from idea generation through to production and management. i have shot a wide variety of projects for the robin collective and everyone of them has been amazing fun. the baptist - l'oscar executive chef at l'oscar, tony fleming, began his career working locally in his hometown of cambridge. in 1995, he moved to london where he worked for richard neat and marco pierre white before becoming head chef at sir terrance conran's great eastern hotel and taking up his first executive chef role at one aldwych. i am lucky enough to call him a friend, so when he asked me to shoot the first menu of his new restaurant i didn’t say no. rosalind miller wedding cakes rosalind miller's wedding cakes are exquisite. i do not think i have ever used the word 'exquisite' before. i was commissioned to photograph rosalind's edible masterpieces for a recipe book with each shot intended to be a double page spread with text overlay. the creative concept underpinning this shoot is very simple. these cakes are works of art. give them the gallery setting they demand! prop usage was kept to a minimum while tremendous care was taken to select the perfect backdrop colour to compliment the cake design. the position of the camera and the position of objects in the frame were each calculated with precision. south place hotel i was lucky enough to shoot south place hotel from its creation through many fun years. i was making photos for use across the full range of the hotels promotional requirements and a lot of fun was had. katie eary x kfc i was asked to shoot some photographs to promote the collaboration between fashion designer katy eary and kfc for london fashion week. katy was asked to produce a capsule collection in one day and to design the boxes for a kfc product that was being promoted during london fashion week 2016. under the sink as any freelancer will tell you, the dreaded work lull can be truly anxiety inducing. when i found myself stuck in the middle of one such lull, i decided to shake off doom vibes by undertaking a photography project i knew for sure i could execute quickly, at home, with zero budget - then turn into a zine. this is 'under the sink' - the second photo zine by garry maclennan. printed in full colour on nice smooth a5 paper, under the sink has 28 pages and features a colourful journey through the contents of my cupboards. i present under the sink. no items from under my sink were harmed in the making of under the sink. my wife added the words. available from www.notthekind.com hotels a selection of work completed for a variety of hotels, bars and restaurants around london. i love creating work that best suits the personality of the venue and showing off the characters that really make a place memorable. ingrid petrie some promotional photography for print designer ingrid petrie. styled by clare nicolson. keith coghill furniture i was commissioned by keith coghill furniture to deliver a brand photography package comprising a photo story lookbook, styled product imagery, and concept-driven promotional imagery. the photographs tell the story of keith the craftsman, keith the furniture maker. they tell the story of his creative process from design through to production and they reveal the places and spaces from which he works and draws inspiration. the land, the sea, the highland pace of life... it's all in there. this project presented a rare opportunity for me to shoot on my home turf in the scottish highlands and thanks to the creative freedom afforded to me by keith and his art director, grant – it also presented an opportunity to combine the usual meticulous planning with a dose of live experimentation, the results of which turned out to be pretty magical. music prior to becoming a professional photographer i was immersed in the world of music - as a writer + performer, a sound engineer, a producer, a manager... i was engaged in all sorts of musical 'stuff'. it makes sense then, i guess, that one of the first things i did once i'd picked up my camera was shoot music portraits.
